Reported Combatant: Kharkiv Killer

Case File 04
Reported Combatant: Kharkiv Killer
Year: 2022
Status: Circulated / Published / Archived
Reach: Cross-platform dissemination, propaganda repost networks
Case Description
The work enters public discourse as a piece of war propaganda centered around a heroic figure, the Kharkiv Killer. The hero is a 17-year-old sniper who "has already taken down 3 BTR-82As and 2 BTR-80s, immobilizing an entire column as they attempted to enter Kharkiv." Meaning is produced not by the image alone, but by the scale and velocity of its circulation.
Mechanism
A fabricated heroic figure is introduced into wartime information channels where urgency, emotion, and narrative clarity accelerate uptake. As the image and accompanying story move across repost networks, the heroic subject becomes legible through repetition rather than verification. Circulation produces the combatant as a credible public figure independent regardless of veracity.
Circulation Log
Initial appearance: war-related image and narrative released on Twitter/X through an anonymous account

Attribution Status
Authorship is displaced by the conditions of wartime circulation. The work persists primarily through reposted and reformatted instances in which prior appearance functions as evidence of legitimacy. The figure is stabilized by dissemination rather than by a recoverable point of origin.
Observations
Narrative clarity increases propagandistic force.
Repetition converts a figure into a public symbol.
Velocity of circulation substitutes for verification.
The image operates as a hero-producing device within wartime media systems.
Reference Function
The project serves as a reference model for the production of heroic identity through propaganda circulation. Repetition, emotional framing, and wartime dissemination convert a powerful story into a credible public narrative.
